"Who Throws a Show?"

Article 19 states the following:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions with interference and to see, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers.

The above was article 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I chose to follow this article because the first amendment in our country is something I hold very dearly to my heart. Aside from working in a free press institution having the ability to think and speak freely is something I think take for granted in our country. It is hard to believe that there are places in the world, which do not respect the ability to speak freely, and ability to hold ideas.

Legally speaking one can argue that absolute freedom of speech does not exist. Let’s break it down. There is public speech like expression, followed by political, and commercial speech. Let’s focus on expression because it pertains to us the most. Expression is strictly scrutinized in our country, meaning that all forms of expression that is designed to communicate ideas are fine to say. However individuals’ speech is not all free. America limited the freedom of expression in the best interest of its citizens. Expression that includes false advertising, incitement to violence, and anything that can lead to a matter of national security cannot be said and published.

Lets remember that this article in the bill of rights highlights something that we all use, and care about. Without the freedom of press there could be no higher education, proper news, or even social networking websites! Freedom of expression allows journalists to publish, and report the news. When an emergency occurs, the people in our country look for answers. The link below shows how many users per minute were logging into news websites when United Airlines Flight 1549 made a crash landing in the Hudson River. The next clip is news package infighting the freedom of expression with particular respect to the Middle Eastern act of throwing a shoe, which is very disrespectful. So in conclusion remember that you have the ability to use your voice, and should be proud of it.
